Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Iceland is one of the most beautiful things in the world I’ve ever seen. And, of course, – volcanic black sand beach nearby. In my opinion, this is a place, that cannot be skipped while visiting Iceland. There the life-lasting impressions are guaranteed.
As I am a big lover of colours, contrasts of them in Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon really give deep emotions: black sand beach, milky, blacky and intensive crystalline blue icebergs, white snowy caps around and ivory spatters of strong ocean waves. Magic of the bright blue colour of some icebergs can be simply explained by the interplay of ice crystals and light.
Jökulsárlón is a huge glacial lake with a depth of around 250 meters and considered as the deepest lake in the whole country. This icy heaven on Earth is located in the South end of Vatnajökull glacier. All the icebergs, which can be seen all around are formed in the glacier, from where they float further through glacial lake, pass small channel and finally find their way into the open ocean.
- I visited this site in August, but even in summertime there is really cold. Taking warm clothes is always good idea.
- There works a small bar, where you can buy some hot drinks, snacks or postcards.
- Commercial boat tours on the lake are organized.
- In my opinion, in the best way Iceland can be done by car, but there are bus routes, which are going to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon too.
